Tree Planting Initiative – Site Preparation
June 25 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus is the custodian of one of the oldest institutions in the country, the National Herbarium of Trinidad and Tobago, which celebrated its 200th Anniversary on May 22nd, 2018. This institution originated in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Port of Spain, when it was established by the British Crown and has flourished into an internationally respected research centre.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary, a ceremonial planting of two trees on the St. Augustine Campus by the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, and the Principal of the Campus, Professor Brian Copeland, took place on its anniversary which coincided with the International Day of Biological Diversity.
Now, the Herbarium is initiating the planting of 200+ native species of trees on a degraded hillside close to Hillview College in Tunapuna in collaboration with our organization, the UWI Biological Society. We cordially invite you to partake in this planting event on Friday 29th June 2018. Prior to the planting of these trees, we will be assisting the Forestry Division with the digging of holes for these 200+ trees and with the cutting of fire trails.
On the planting date, June 29th, there will be a ceremony at 09:00 AM. Among the invited guests are the pending responses of our President and Prime Minister. The planting event will begin at 10:00 AM and is estimated to end at 12:00 PM.
As we come closer to the tree planting ceremony, we must prepare the designated areas for the trees to be planted. On Monday 25th June, we invite you to assist us in preparation for the ceremony. We will be working between the hours of 08:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
The Forestry Division along with CEPEP will be clearing the hill which would alleviate us of doing so ourselves. We are expecting to dig 200 holes to accommodate the trees which will be planted on the 29th.
If you are interested and will be joining us on one or both of these days, kindly note the following:
We will not be providing any tools. You must bring your own tools for digging.
You do not need to volunteer for the entire shift. We gladly welcome any form of help that will assist us towards digging these 200 holes.
Wear comfortable clothing. This includes:
Hat (we will be working in the sun)
We will be providing bottled water but we encourage you to #BeatPlasticPollution and bring your own water.
Bring light snacks.
We would greatly appreciate if you can help us get the word out. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.
