It’s a great time to be a fan of high end Caribbean Rum. The year began with the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados announcing their upcoming releases; eagerly anticipated bottlings like Foursquare Dominus, Foursquare Premise, Destino, Principia, and more.
The rum news continued with an application for label approval found by spirit blogger CocktailWonk that indicated that another Barbadian Rum Maker was releasing a new rum. That producer was Saint Nicholas Abbey, and the rum in question was a brand new Twenty Year Old Expression; their oldest release to date.
Saint Lucia Distillers also announced an update to their Chairman’s Reserve Line of Rums and two new products; Chairman’s Reserve 1931, and Chairman’s Reserve Master’s Selection Single Batch.
News of rum releases has now returned to Barbados with another approval for a label being found by CocktailWonk. This time, it’s from Mount Gay Distilleries.
Here is the name, the details, and the label of this upcoming Limited Edition Mount Gay Rum.
Mount Gay XO: The Peat Smoke Edition is a limited edition offering from Mount Gay Rum Distilleries. It’s a blend of pot still and column still rums matured in American oak barrels and then further finished in Islay peated whisky casks.
In some ways, this limited edition release is similar to Mount Gay XO Cask Strength Limited Edition since it’s being bottled at cask proof instead of being diluted.
It’s also similar to Volume One of the Mount Gay Origin Series where different types of barrels were used to age the rum; a toasted French Oak Cask, and a once used American White Oak Cask.
As part of the Rémy Cointreau Group, Mount Gay Distilleries has access to casks from Bruichladdich single malts, Port Charlotte, and Octomore to age Mount Gay XO Peat Smoke Edition.
