How to stay hydrated during Carnival

Most people, especially those that frequented the gym in preperation for carnival would know the importance of staying hydrated and it’s relevance to weight-loss, muscle-building and general good-health.
Staying hydrated on a regular day is a relatively straightforward task and is manageable for most people. Carnival Monday and Tuesday however provide some unique challenges with the addition of hot sun and alcohol and activity for two days in a row.
Both alcohol and exposure to direct sunlight are associated with several health risks; one of which is dehydration.
Dehydration causes headaches, nausea and weakness as well as several other problems that affect your ability to properly enjoy carnival.
Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated and healthy on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Eat watermelon for breakfast. Watermelon is 92% water and 6% sugar by weight providing energy and hydration in a healthy snack.
Watermelon also has a high fullness factor so it keeps off hunger for a while.

Mix alcoholic beverages with water or coconut water. Mixing alcohol with sweet chasers masks the taste leading to more alcohol consumption.
Mixing with water reduces slightly the dehydrating effects of alcohol and mixing with coconut water helps in replacing important electrolytes.

Take a break to drink some water every few hours and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Stay away from caffeine and salty food. Try to drink coconut water or bottled water with a meal that features a wide variety of carbohydrates.

Have a safe and enjoyable carnival!
